World Breastfeeding Week 2024: Breastfeeding, while a fulfilling experience, can present various challenges. Despite its advantages, many mothers encounter challenges along the way. Even if it’s the healthiest approach to feeding your child, a few problems could make the process challenging. Understanding these problems and how to address them can make the breastfeeding journey smoother and more rewarding.

The Infant Won’t Even Latch

One common issue is when the baby refuses to latch.

  • Latch-on problems occur when the baby does not attach to the breast correctly, leading to inadequate milk transfer and nipple pain. Mothers may notice painful breastfeeding, a frustrated or fussy baby at the breast, frequent slipping off the breast, and nipple damage such as cracking or bleeding. Lactation specialists emphasize the importance of skin-to-skin contact to encourage newborns to latch.
  • If latching is difficult, try undressing your baby down to their diaper and removing your clothes from the waist up. Hold your baby at your breast and try again. This method often helps establish a successful latch by promoting a calm and intimate environment. Proper positioning with good technique can help the baby to latch correctly.

Latching Difficulties Due To Inverted Or Flat Nipples

Not all breastfeeding problems stem from medical issues. Some mothers may have naturally flat or inverted nipples, making breastfeeding more challenging. To address this, consider using nipple formers, which are devices placed inside your bra to help draw out the nipple in preparation for breastfeeding. Additionally, pumping your breasts before nursing can stimulate milk flow and prepare the nipples for feeding.

Engorged Breasts

Engorged and aching breasts are:

  1. Another common breastfeeding issue.
  2. Typically occurring rapidly after increasing the milk supply correctly.
  3. Leading to engorgement.

How long does breast engorgement last when breastfeeding? Engorgement happens when milk stagnates and needs to be expressed. If soreness is present, hand/manual expression of the milk can alleviate engorgement. Applying hot fomentation before expression can aid in milk flow. A hot bath or soaking a towel in hot water for a hot compress can also be effective. After expressing milk, applying a cold pack can help reduce inflammation.

Conclusion

Breastfeeding, while natural, can present various challenges that can significantly improve the breastfeeding experience. Always seek support from doctors, lactation consultants, and breastfeeding support groups to ensure mother and baby thrive during this critical phase. Remember, each breastfeeding journey is unique, and with the proper support and information, most challenges can be successfully overcome.
